Drawings |
The holdings of graphic art are founded on the Douce bequest of 1834 and the purchase by public subscription in 1842 of the superlative drawings by Michelangelo and Raphael collected by Sir Thomas Lawrence. To this foundation have been added important groups of drawings of all the main European schools: the English drawings and watercolours include, for example, fine-quality assemblages by J.M.W. Turner, Samuel Palmer, John Ruskin, Sir Edward Burne-Jones, and Max Beerbohm. The holdings of more recent prints and drawings are being actively developed as opportunities offer themselves. Some drawings are usually on display in the public galleries, while the remainder may be seen in the Department's Print Room. |
